A Marine deployed on a mission to Haiti on board the Norfolk-based amphibious transport dock Nashville apparently committed suicide during the night.
A Pentagon official said Wednesday that the Marine was killed by a gunshot wound and was found in the ship's berthing area.
If the cause of death is confirmed as suicide, it would be the second military member to have committed suicide during the operation in Haiti.
No name or unit was immediately available, the Pentagon official said.
About 1,800 Marines left northern Haiti Monday aboard the Norfolk-based amphibious ships Wasp and Nashville, bound for the United States.
The Nashville is currently in port in Puerto Rico.
Spc. Alejandro Robles of Los Angeles died Sept. 27 of an apparent self-inflicted wound in Haiti. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division based in Fort Drum, N.Y.
