The cost of living in Dare County continues to be the highest in the state, and is 14 percent above the national average, according to the latest figures compiled by the American Association of Community and Economic Development Research Professionals.
Triggering the high ranking in the second-quarter report was housing, which in Dare County was 36 percent above the national average, and utilities, 29 percent above the average.
In the other four categories used to come up with the rankings, Dare County was 7 percent above average in miscellaneous goods and services, 2 percent above in transportation, 1 percent below in groceries, and 9 percent below in health care.
The cost of living index is determined by compiling 59 items in consumer goods and services, provided in Dare County by the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.
According to the report, Boston was the most expensive area, with an index of 136, 36 percent above the average, set at 100 for the nation. Philadelphia was listed at 129, and Los Angeles at 124.
In North Carolina, Charlotte was listed at 101, Raleigh-Durham at 99. Greensboro at 99, Greenville at 97, and Fayetteville at 96. by CNB
