A tow-truck driver and his passenger were killed early Wednesday when the driver lost control and slammed into a ditch in a rural section of the city, police said.
David W. Holland, a 39-year-old driver for Churchland Wrecker Service who lived in the 1000 block of Shore Road, was towing Deborah F. Tew's car sometime after 1 a.m. when the accident happened on George Washington Highway near Douglas Road.
Tew, 29, of the 500 block of Hulen Drive, called Holland, her friend, after her car broke down, said police spokesman Tony Torres.
Holland's truck was traveling north when it drifted partly into the southbound lane, Torres said. The driver of an oncoming car flashed high-beam headlights, and Holland jerked back into his lane. Torres said Holland then drifted onto the shoulder, overcorrected, and the tow truck flipped. It ended up in the opposite ditch.
Torres said both occupants died at the scene with apparent head injuries. He did not know if they had been wearing seatbelts.
The crash is still under investigation, but no charges are planned, Torres said.
