ELVIN L. DAUGHTRY

Elvin Lee Daughtry, 70, a retired welding instructor, died Oct. 7, 1994, in Portsmouth General Hospital.

Mr. Daughtry was born in Portsmouth, son of the late Hulda Daughtry Williams and Cola Daughtry. He retired from Shop 27, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, after 27 years of service. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where he was a member for 47 years. He was a member of American Fellowship Lodge (NU)148, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason at Portsmouth Valley, a member of the Eastern Star and of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He retired from the U.S. Army, having served as a staff sergeant during World War II. He received three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for his service.

Survivors include three daughters, Claire Leigh Berry and Christine Daughtry, both of Portsmouth, and Norma Jean Daughtry of Virginia Beach; a sister, Edith Milliner of Portsmouth; two brothers, Earl Daughtry of Portsmouth and Herbert Daughtry of Napa Valley, Calif.; and two grandchildren, William Brad Martin of Virginia Beach and Holly Jean Berry of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Baptist Church, 3710 Deep Creek Blvd., Portsmouth, by the Rev. Kevin Wilson. Interment with Masonic rites will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. Visitation will be held at the church from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. Altmeyer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
