NANSEMOND RIVER GOLFERS WIN DISTRICT

Butterflies were flying around coach Don Horne's stomach Friday, but his Nansemond River golfers held off a strong York High challenge to capture the Bay Rivers District championship by seven strokes at the Suffolk Golf Course.

Horne's Warriors led by 10 strokes going into the final round, but after the first nine holes, York had cut that lead to only four strokes. Nansemond River settled down on the back side and with a big boost from J.C. Caperton's par 36 widened the margin by three strokes and won by seven.

``York beat us by 32 strokes in the first match of the season at Williamsburg and won the regular season championship,'' Horne said. ``But I still thought we could beat them in the tournament, and we did.

``There were only nine strokes separating our top four golfers. And the beautiful part of this is that they are all coming back next year.

``Evan Spivey is a freshman, Shaun Robertson is a sophomore and the rest are all juniors.''

Caperton, one of those Warrior juniors, shot a 44-36-80 to go with Thursday's first-round 80 to grab medalist honors with a 160.

``We wanted to give York a run for their money,'' he said. They (York) were off their game, and we took advantage of it.''

Only the top three schools - Nansemond River, York and Poquoson - qualified for the regional tourney along with the top five individuals who are not on qualifying teams. Those qualifiers were Jose Cristia and Chris Ricks, both of Lakeland, Kyle Cousins and Andy Harrup, both of Franklin, and Chris Dale of Smithfield.

The regional event will be at the Ft. Eustis Golf Course on Oct. 18. JOHN GORDON
