FORMER PIT MVP GETS ANOTHER SHOT IN NBA

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

Dave Jamerson, the most valuable player of the 1990 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, is getting another opportunity to make the grade in the NBA.

Jamerson, a college star at Ohio University, signed a contract last week with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In the '90 PIT Jamerson scored 90 points in three games, set a tournament record for 3-pointers with nine, made 11 free throws without a miss and pulled down eight rebounds and had four assists in the championship game.

A 6-foot-5 guard, Jamerson won the MVP award even though his Norfolk Naval Shipyard team lost in the final, 116-114, to the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Churchland teacher Steve Rivers, Portsmouth's hope in the annual Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, already is tuning up for next year's California competition.

Rivers won in his age group (45-49) in the 17th annual Suffolk Peanut Festival 5-K run with a 19:47 clocking.

Charlie Karmosky, chairman of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Honors Court for many years and a former sports editor of the Newport News Daily Press, will be among 12 being inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in Charlottesville.

Norcom has been struggling to field a competitive golf team but the Greyhounds have one rising star in Anthony Gregoire.

Gregoire has qualified for the Eastern Region tournament for the second year in a row.

The Portsmouth Sports Club will be boosting its Scholarship Fund with its second annual Reverse Raffle, scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Ambassador Club.

Tickets can be purchased from Gene Luke.

Wilson grad Jimmy Jolliff searched fruitlessly across Buck Childs Field in an effort to find the plaque that was placed there as a memorial to the late Buck Childs.

There's a feeling that it has been covered by dirt and grass through the years. Jolliff is convinced it is there somewhere.

Longtime sportswriter Abe Goldblatt is recovering from double bypass surgery and can have no visitors at this time.

Goldblatt had intended to attend Pernell ``Sweetpea'' Whitaker's successful title defense against James ``Buddy'' McGirt Saturday at Scope, but was unable to.

It was Goldblatt who provided Whitaker's nickname. Early in the Norfolk boxer's career he was fighting as an amateur and friends called him Sweet Pete. Abe thought they were saying Sweetpea and thus the nickname was born.

Wonder what the state record is for most football victories by a Group AAA high school team?

Prior to Friday night's game with Western Branch, Wilson had won 467 games since 1908. The Presidents lost 253 and tied 51. So Friday's game was No. 772 for Wilson. by CNB
