A celebrity pro-am also is scheduled at 9 p.m. Participants will include former NFL player Walker Gillette, local race drivers Mike Shearin, Tommy Shearin, Richard Holmes, Dan Peters and Lonnie Renfro and 1994 Southampton Speedway queen Vicki Elliott. Franklin city manager Jack Jackson also will participate.

The feature tournament will have two five-game qualifying blocks on Saturday with squad shifts at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The top 16 bowlers will advance to Sunday's finals with head-to-head matches starting at 8 a.m. There will be a TV step-ladder finals format for the top five.

Franklin Bowling Center is located at 1327 Armory Drive in Franklin.

Bowler of the week honors go to veteran bowler Mike Luck. Or rather No Luck.

Mike left the No. 7 pin on an apparent strike hit on his 12th pitch of his second game in the Industrial League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. It cost him a 300 game.

The near perfecto was sandwiched between games of 215 and 150 in a 664 series.

Luck was averaging 189. He's been a regular 200-average bowler in recent years.

Tenpin topics: Bobby Wheeler came within a wiggling No. 6 pin of bowling a perfect game in the Masters League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. His 299 came between games of 161 and 160 in a 620 series. He crossed over on his last pitch. . . . Shot of the week: Robert Taylor converted the 7-10 in the Friday Mixers League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Leslie Livesay had a 290 game in the Ladies Classic League at Pinboy's of Norfolk, a league record and 100 pins over her average. Livesay rolled a 667 series. . . . Fran Sansone won the Masters 225 Invitational at Augusta for the second time. A fourth-place finisher last year, Sansone pocketed $1,250 with her victory. . . . Kristi Richards, one of the area's finest youth bowlers, had a sixth-place finish in the National Coca-Cola Youth Championships this summer. At 16, she was the youngest of the top finishers and had the best score by any Virginia entries. Kristi averaged at a 190 clip in the tournament. In local league play she is now moving among the regular 180 shooters. . . . Charles Mott zipped 100 over average with his 279 game in the Monday Scratch Doubles League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Joel and Ann Bennett won the Scotch Doubles at Franklin Bowl with 626. Mike and Joyce Joyner were runners-up with 599. . . . Blossoming youth star Harold Credle Jr. had a 258 game and 646 series in the Junior/Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. Another junior bowler, Jose Ortiz, pitched a 246 game in the Big & Little League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Other game gems this week: 297 by George Murphy in the Charles Peete League at Pinboy's of Norfolk; 289 by Stephen Kurz in the Thursday Mixed League at Pinboy's at Beach; 279 by Ed Martin in the Monday Nite Mixed at Franklin Bowl; 275 by Scott Brown in the Virginia Beach Eagles League at Plaza Bowl; 279 by Rick Gregovich in the Safety Center League at Pinboy's of Norfolk; and 276 by David Batten in the Grif/Han League at the same center. . . . Teet Cotterell, barely missing a Century award, had a 246 game in the Tuesday Hi-Rollers League. She averages only 156. . . . Randolph Price zipped 100 over average with a 251 game in the Screwballs League. He averages 141.

Duckpin data: Sharon Williams, the new president of the National Duckpin Bowling Congress from Virginia Beach, suggests bowlers ``put the fun back in bowling'' in her first report in The Duckpin News. Writes Williams: ``If you bowl in more than one league, try something new this year. Bowl in a league with a fun format. Pick up that low average bowler who always seems to get left out. These days it seems that people are only interested in the amount of money they will get at the end of the season. This leaves a lot of bowlers who don't score well out in the cold.''. . . . Thirteen-year-old Scotty Weatherford had a 144 game in the Victory Youth League. He has upped his average to the 102 mark. . . .

Tiger Baker fired a 173 game en route to his 470 series in the VPA Wednesday Nite Doubles League. . . . Martha Rush's 165 single led to a 413 series in the Wednesday Morning Mixed League. . . . Bowlers at Victory Lanes have raised about half their goal to retile the ceiling of the center. . . .

The Herman Gaines Classic at Victory Lanes runs through next weekend and offers $1,700 in prizes. The first weekend leader was Paul Sandefur. Sandefur also shot a 189 game for a season high in the Industrial League. . . . Lil Hollinger flipped a 170 game in the Tuesday Housewives League. . . . Jack Phillips racked up a 487 series in the Independent Loafers League. by CNB
