GREAT BRIDGE'S TWINE WINS DISTRICT TOURNEY

WHEN ALL WAS SAID and done, the individual title at the Southeastern District golf tournament came down to a two-man race.

Entering the second and final round at the Stumpy Lake Golf Course, Great Bridge's Robbie Twine was cast in the roll of challenger, one stroke behind Spencer Moore of Western Branch. The only real advantage Twine had was that he was playing in the final foursome of the day and could keep a close eye on Moore in the group ahead.

Both players shot a 38 on the front nine, and Moore surged to a three-stroke lead when Twine bogied at 13. But according to Western Branch coach Wayne Petersen, that's when ``the wheels fell off'' for Moore.

A double bogey at 14 and bogies on 15 and 16 opened the door for Twine, who used steady, if not spectacular play, to pull even with Moore. Twine hit for par on 17, taking a one-stroke lead when Moore bogied.

According to Twine, he sensed the title was in his grasp when Moore teed off on the 18th hole.

``It had been real close all day, but then I saw him hit a bad tee shot on the last hole, so I just played for par,'' he said. Throughout the day, Twine conferred with teammate Alton Todd, who was playing in Moore's group, for updates on Moore's score.

Moore double bogied 18 to finish three strokes behind Twine.

``Spencer had a rough back nine. He got three strokes up with a birdie and then got into a little trouble,'' said Petersen. ``He put a lot of pressure on himself to do well.''

TOURNEY NOTES: Churchland's Robert Davis had the lowest score in the final round with a 76. Davis was a model of consistency with a 38 on both the front and back nine. . . . Only two other players hit under 80 at Stumpy Lake - Great Bridge's Robbie Twine (77) and Deep Creek's Chris Huntzinger (78). Huntzinger finished with a two-day score of 158 to qualify for the Regions along with Norcom's Anthony Gregoire (172) and Indian River's Jason Barnes (167), Matt Davis (173) and Joe Mejstrik (173). Chad Page of Oscar Smith missed qualifying by one stroke. . . . The lowest score for nine holes of golf was 36, both at Sleepy Hole (Twine and Moore) and Stumpy Lake (Great Bridge's Spencer Sigmon). . . . Wilson's Jason Smith made the biggest improvement from the first round, shooting an 81 at Stumpy Lake, a 14-stroke difference over his opening round 95. Churchland's Robbie Floyd went the other way, with a 108 final round from a 93 at Sleepy Hole. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by MARTIN SMITH-RODDEN
