NOTEBOOK

VOLLEYBALL: There were a few inaccuracies in a story about the Indian River volleyball team that appeared in the Clipper last Sunday. First, the only loss the Braves have suffered this season was to Osbourn Park, not Mills Godwin as initially reported.

Also, the Clipper stated that Indian River had already defeated Midlothian. At the time, that wasn't true. But the statement proved to be visionary, as the Braves returned from a weekend tournament in Manassas with not only a win over the Trojans, but the tournament title.

Indian River didn't drop a game in the entire tourney, scoring wins over Varina (15-3, 15-6), L.C. Bird (15-7, 15-12), and Monacan (15-2, 15-5). The Braves stomped Midlothian, 15-7, 15-0, in the final.

Jeannine Simpson took home tournament MVP honors. Maria Astudillo was named to the All-Tournament team as well.

YOUTH BASEBALL: Indian River Pony Baseball has several board positions that need to be filled. Baseball is supported through a bingo program at Portlock Hall, and without bingo workers the baseball program will not survive.

Positions open include bingo chairman and volunteer workers.

There will be an emergency board meeting on Wednesday Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Portlock Hall to elect new members. The public is encouraged to attend.

Info: Judy Smith at 420-3477; John & Carol Bailey at 424-4723; Chuck & Gerri Ford at 424-3732.

GOLDEN MOMENT: Karen Howe of Chesapeake recently returned from the Mid-Atlantic Regionals of the United States National Aerobic Championship in Baltimore, where she took home the gold medal in the Master's Division.

The win in the Master's Division, for female athletes over 35, qualified Howe to participate in the Women's Individual competition, where she took home the silver medal. At 40, Howe was the oldest competitor to medal in that event in the 10-year history of the competition.

Howe is a Director of Aerobics at Gold's Gym Aerobics and Fitness Center in Virginia Beach. In January she will travel to Houston to compete in the U.S. National Aerobic Championship finals.

MIDDLE SCHOOLS: Football kicked off this week at the area middle schools, and defending Chesapeake Middle School League champion Indian River got off to a good start in defense of its title. The Braves hosted Oscar Smith and defeated the Tigers, 26-12. In other matchups, Deep Creek won at home, 22-6, over Western Branch, and Great Bridge hit the road and shut out Crestwood, 23-0.

Middle school volleyball also started play this week. In the opening day of action, Oscar Smith edged Crestwood, 3-2, Great Bridge blanked Indian River, 3-0, and defending champs Western Branch defeated Deep Creek, 3-0.

SOCCER SCORES: The Elizabeth River Soccer Club Magic girls U-12 team blanked the U-11 Williamsburg team, 4-0, on goals by Lisa Cowles, Kendall Angus, Sarah Therrien, and Leah Starkey. In boys' action, goalies Johnny Moore and Bart Franks combined on the shutout as the ERSC U-11 Renegades defeated U-12 Lafayette, 1-0. Chris Bumgardner scored the only goal.

The U-12 Lightning won 3-1 over the Atlantic U-13 Flash on goals by Chad Godwin, Ryan Kenrick, and Ryan Bumgardner.

The U-14 Warriors lost a close 1-0 match to the Newport News U-14 Aztecs, and the U-10 Hurricanes fell, 4-1, to the Yorktown Explosion. David Williams scored the Hurricanes' only goal.

ATHLETIC MEETING: The Indian River Athletic Association will hold its regular meeting at the Indian River Community Center on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.
