EARL W. DOWNS

Earl Warren ``Butch'' Downs, 56, died October 8, 1994, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Downs was born in Minoa, NY and grew up in Wakefield, Va. He was the son of the late Don E. and Roberta W. Downs.

Mr. Downs retired with 36 years of service from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as quality assurance manager in the nuclear quality engineering and analysis division. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.

Mr. Downs is survived by his wife, Sylvia Lawson Downs; son Charles E. Downs, his wife Regina and their sons Chase and Scott of Gloucester; son Mark W. Downs, his wife Penny of Lynchburg; and son David E. Downs of Suffolk. Other survivors include seven sisters, Hellen M. Downs of Waverly, Nellie D. Bailey of Richmond, Edna D. Riggan of Durham, NC, Dorothy D. Cobb of Zuni, Mary D. O'Geary of North Largo, FL, Sue D. Jones of Bardstown, Ky., and Sandra Wagner of Milwaukee, WI. He was predeceased by a brother, Oren E. Downs.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. Rob Vaughan with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the hospice unit of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, 1900 N. Main Street, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
