VA. WESLEYAN WOMEN SCORE OT SOCCER WIN

Freshman Marcie Blackbourn scored in the first of two 15-minute overtime periods as the Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team rolled to its 10th straight win with a 2-1 decision over Roanoke Saturday.

Down 1-0 at the half, Blackbourn sent a cross from 15 yards out to Paige Kerry, who followed it up in front of the box to tie the game with 15:14 to go in regulation.

The Lady Marlins (10-1-0, 7-0 ODAC) put the game away in OT when Mandy Nixon fed Blackbourn from 18 yards out and she sent it to the corner of the net passed keeper Kara Hedges.

Meredith Arnott scored Roanoke's (5-3-1, 3-2 ODAC) lone goal 24:08 in on a penalty kick.

The Lady Marlins, outshot the Lady Maroons, 24-12.

Virginia Wesleyan will travel to Salisbury State, which is ranked 10th in the South Atlantic Region, on Tuesday.

LADY MONARCHS WIN: The Lady Monarchs (4-6, 2-3 CAA) ended their three game losing streak Saturday in North Carolina with a 3-1 win over UNC Wilmington (1-9, 0-4 CAA) in a CAA women's soccer match.

Carla Bauer put ODU on the board at the 36:36 mark on an assist from Suzanne Shaw. Shaw hit Kelly Martin and Michele Kubicek netted a goal to put the game away for the Lady Monarchs. Keeper Pam Dennis, who ranks fifth nationally in saves, made six on the day.

Angie Gospoderek scored the Seahawks' only goal.

ODU will visit the U.S. Naval Academy at 7 p.m. Monday.

ODU SURVIVES SCARE: Sue Callahan scored with 10 minutes remaining to lift No. 3 Old Dominion (9-2-1) over Providence College, 1-0, in Saturday's field hockey match in Rhode Island.

Keeper Kim Decker recorded her sixth shutout of the season as the Lady Monarchs outshot the Lady Friars, 15-4. Old Dominion will travel to sixth-ranked Northeastern today at 1:30 p.m.

SALTARELLI LIFTS VA. WESLEYAN: Monica Saltarelli got the best of Roanoke keeper Meghan Carr, recovering from a Beth Tarver shot 16 minutes into the second half, to give Virginia Wesleyan a 2-1 win in an ODAC field hockey matchup at Virginia Wesleyan.

Saltarelli's goal came just a minute after Tarver tied it up for the Lady Marlins (4-3, 3-3 ODAC) on a fast break that was capped with her shot in the left corner of the net.

With 15 minutes remaining Roanoke (4-3, 2-2 ODAC) had a chance to tie it up on a penalty stroke, but keeper Bobbi Losee, a First Colonial graduate, halted the Lady Maroons' efforts. by CNB
