A poll published Sunday showed a dead heat in the closely watched contest between Democratic Sen. Charles S. Robb and Republican Oliver North.
Forty-two percent of likely voters in the Virginia Senate race interviewed by The Washington Post chose North and 41 percent Robb. The margin of error was 4 percentage points, making the contest a statistical dead heat.
Independent J. Marshall Coleman was favored by 9 percent of those interviewed, while 8 percent were undecided.
The telephone poll, conducted Sept. 30 through last Tuesday, surveyed 808 registered voters who said they would vote Nov. 8.
Previous polls had indicated Robb was trailing North.
