North Carolina Senate leader Marc Basnight is scheduled to meet with a saltwater fishing license study committee here this afternoon to outline his ideas for a proposed license for coastal sports anglers.
During the meeting, Basnight, D-Manteo, is expected to talk with committee members about his proposal for a trust fund to be created with money raised from license sales.
The meeting is the last of the study committee before a series of public hearings on the proposed license is held Oct. 17-26.
Today's meeting was called after some study committee members questioned Basnight's plans for the license, fisheries officials said.
In meetings with fisheries officials and sports fishing groups in Raleigh, Basnight offered a plan to create a trust fund with the proceeds, and for the interest from the fund to be used only to improve the state's fisheries stocks and related programs.
In its preliminary report, the study committee recommended spending about 10 percent of the license proceeds to administer the program and about 20 percent for fisheries enforcement.
But Basnight has said no money from license sales should go for either expense.
Today's meeting is scheduled to be from noon to 5 p.m. at the regional office of the state Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources, 1423 Carolina Ave. in Washington. by CNB
