TUNA, MARLIN MAKE LATE SHOWING

A splendid autumn weekend produced some exciting moments for anglers along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, highlighted by big catches of yellowfin tuna.

Most tuna, however, were under 60 pounds and there were no reports of any yellowfins topping the 70-pound minimum for citations from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.

Wahoo also made a strong late showing off the two states, with the biggest Virginia catch a 65-pounder boated by Ken Chilton of Suffolk, fishing on the private boat Pursuer, skippered by Ray Temple of Virginia Beach.

Perhaps the weekend's biggest surprise was the release of three white marlin Saturday by anglers abpard the Mamie E., a private boat skippered by Bill Temple of Virginia Beach. Few whites have ever been caught off Virginia any later in the season.

Hundreds of speckled trout were taken by boat and beach fishermen between Eastern Shore bayside creeks and Ocracoke Inlet on the North Carolina Outer Banks. The biggest reported was a 6-pound, 5-ounce lunker pulled from the surf of Hatteras Island by Robert Galvan of Texas City, Texas. by CNB
