VISTA BLACKWATCH CAPTURES COLUMBUS DAY U-19 TITLE

The Vista Blackwatch closed out the 11th annual Columbus Day Soccer Tournament by capturing the U-19 premier division championship with a 2-1 victory over Reston Team America at the ODU soccer complex.

Keith Stansfield scored in the first and second half to increase his team-leading output to 21 goals for the season.

The West Springfield High senior booted in an easy shot with 10 minutes left in the first half on a 3-on-2 break - shooting down the middle of the field and taking a pass from Aaron Brunner from the right side.

He scored again with 20:45 left in the game, taking a pass from Bo Noonan and catching Reston keeper Chris Flores off guard. Flores apparently thought Stansfield was offsides - not seeing teammate John Duval standing in the right corner.

``That was a great play from the wing and I just misdirected it,'' Stansfield said. ``The first goal was just a one-touch, but it was also from a great ball fed to me.''

The defending region champion Blackwatch (17-0-2) finished second in last year's final to the Beach FC Fury, and was estatic about its first meeting of the year with the recently formed Reston team.

``We're very happy with our finish,'' said Reston coach Nick Tzirmis, whose team dropped to 13-2-2. ``We just wanted to get to the final to play them and work some of our kinks out. We'll both be in the state cup in two weeks and hopefully, meet again in the semifinals.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo by MOTOYA NAKAMURA, Staff
