Two families were left without a home Monday morning when a fire damaged their house.
Firefighters responded to the house at 1125 21st St. at 11:34 a.m., minutes after the fire was reported, Fire Marshal R.L. Ware Jr. said.
Burned out of their home were Barbara Gotay and her three children, who lived on the first floor, and Sue Spellman, who lived on the second, Ware said.
Officials believe the fire started when Gotay's youngest child played with a cigarette lighter. The fire was confined to a first-floor bathroom and a second-floor kitchenette, Ware said, and caused about $12,000 in damage.
Ware said the scene was cleared shortly after 1 p.m.
