MORE THAN A decade after leaving Isle of Wight County's retail community, Maxway is back in town.
The county's newest general store, which opened in late September, occupies 16,000 square feet in Smithfield Plaza. Maxway is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Financial problems forced the county's first Maxway to close in 1982. The North Carolina-based Variety Wholesale Corp. later purchased the retail chain and gradually reopened several Maxway stores.
``Although we have the same name, we are not the same store,'' said manager Jerry Scott. ``We are a different company.
According to Scott, Maxway's opening is filling a retail gap in the county. The store's shoppers will be able to find virtually any item needed at the best prices, Scott said.
Maxway gets its inventory by purchasing close-out specials from other stores or manufacturers at discounted prices, Scott said. Maxway then passes those savings on to customers at bargain prices, he said.
``We cater to our customers,'' Scott said. ``At Maxway, people will find the friendliest service and sharpest prices in town.''
Scott is confident the store's accessible location will be a drawing card for customers. Thursday, Peebles will open its new departent store next door and will draw more customers.
``One reason we chose this site is the traffic,'' Scott said. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by JOHN H. SHEALLY II
