Two inmates of the Dare County Detention Center have been assigned to clean county office buildings formerly cleaned by a private firm.
The inmates, a county spokesman said Tuesday, each will be paid 70 cents a day and receive time toward an early release.
The private cleaning firm headed by Shirley Hassell of Manns Harbor, who is the Democratic nominee in the November election for the Board of Commissioners, was paid $18,500 a year.
The contract was terminated Sunday by County Manager Terry Wheeler, who contended that the firm was not doing its job of cleaning four county buildings.
A spokesman said the county will save more than $10,000 even after about $8,000 is used to pay the off-duty detention employees who will supervise the working inmates. by CNB
