Speaking at a Virginia Beach retirement home Monday afternoon, U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb said it is unlikely that American forces will engage Iraqi troops, considering the recent developments.
But he said that if another invasion is necessary, American troops ``won't be stopping short'' and allowing Saddam Hussein to remain in power.
``I can't imagine us not being more thorough,'' said Robb, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. ``We're not going to let him get away with these kinds of threats.''
``Do you think we will get rid of him? In other words, kill him?'' asked Colleen Troutman, a Russell House retirement home resident.
``I think he ought to spend every waking hour - and losing sleep at night - knowing, thinking, that the next time we come after him, we're going to get him,'' Robb responded.
He conditioned his answer by pointing out that U.S. policy would prohibit an assassination that is not part of a military action, but said, ``We certainly wouldn't discourage others from making the choice.''
