A 2-year-old girl and her grandmother were hit by a car Tuesday afternoon as they walked along a sidewalk near a supermarket. The driver of the car apparently had a seizure and lost control of the car, police said.
The toddler was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was in critical condition with head injuries Tuesday evening, hospital spokeswoman Maggie Ownes said.
The grandmother, 41, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she also was in critical condition, police said.
Police would not release the names and addresses of the victims but said they both lived in Newport News.
The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of Marshall Ave., police spokesman Bill Roth said.
The grandmother and toddler were walking near a supermarket when a 1988 gray Mercury Topaz left the road and hit them, Roth said.
The girl was caught under the car and dragged more than 60 feet, Roth said, and the grandmother was thrown onto the hood and carried 150 feet.
None of the three people in the car were injured. Roth said police are investigating whether the driver, Arine Moody, 43, of Newport News suffered a seizure before the accident.
