Serene Smith Davis West, 65, of the 1400 block of Mount Pleasant Road, died Wednesday in a Chesapeake hospital.
Mrs. West was born in Duplin County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Paul D. and Serene Williams Smith. Mrs. West retired in 1982 as a teacher with the Chesapeake Public Schools. She was a noted artist and published poet. She was a member of the Unity Renaissance Church.
Survivors include her husband, Richard West; one daughter, Jill Matthews Davis Lewark of Chesapeake; one sister, Betty Hearn of Monroe, N.C.; one grandson, Travis Maylon Lewark of Chesapeake; and one niece, Susan Sanderlin Parker of Duplin County, N.C.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Unity Renaissance Church, 1120 Eden Way North, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Judith Meyer. A viewing will be held today from 9 a.m. to noon at Oman Funeral Home.
