A. Clyde Hager, 90, of the 8800 block of Granby St., died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1994, at his residence.
He was born on a farm near Midkiff, W.Va. The son of the late Enoch A. (Son) and Louvenia Adkins Hager, he lived there for several years where his father was appointed deputy sheriff and jailor of Lincoln County. He then moved to Hamilin, W.Va., where he lived 12 years off and on. He attended school in Hamilin.
He is survived by his wife, Thressa F. Hager, and nieces and nephews in Virginia, West Virginia and Florida. He was the brother of the late Emma Hager Manley of Ashland, Ky.
He served as deputy sheriff in Lincoln County in the 1930s. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was sent to Norfolk, assigned to Shore Patrol and later assigned to the S.S. Norfolk, a bay liner and ran between Norfolk and Baltimore. He served aboard her for four and one-half years. At times there were 300 service personnel aboard. He served in the Navy seven years, when they discharged him as a chief petty officer. He went to work for the U.S. Government in security and worked up through the ranks as Captain Police at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth. He served as Captain for 20 years and had 30 years' service for the Government.
He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church of Norfolk, a member of the Wesleyman Bible Class and sang in the Male Chorus for 40 years. Mr. Hager was an active member in the following fraternal organizations: Corinthian Lodge (NU)266, AF & AM since Dec. 4, 1945, The Scottish Rite and also the Scottish Rite Chorus, Khedive Shrine Temple and also sang in the Khedive Shrine Temple Chanters for 47 years. He traveled to all parts of the country to sing for the Imperial Council of the Shrine. He was a member of the Eastern Star Ocean View Chapter (NU)34 and a member of Tall Cedars (NU)141 of Lebanon, Norfolk.
He enjoyed traveling. Among his hobbies were deer hunting in Pennsylvania and fox hunting in the mountains of West Virginia.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. W. Emmett M. Diggs and Judge Hal Bonney. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
