Seven of the state's historically black colleges and universities have formed an alliance with South Africa's flagship university to foster educational exchanges and collaborative programs.
The seven schools Tuesday formed the consortium with the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg.
``Collaborative efforts of this nature will greatly advance WITS University as a proactive change agent in the new South Africa,'' said WITS Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal June Sinclair.
The participating North Carolina schools are Winston-Salem State University, which will be the headquarters for the program, North Carolina A&T State University, Bennett College, North Carolina Central University, Shaw University, St. Augustine's College and Elizabeth City State University.
High Point-based B&C Associates helped engineer the alliance, which organizers say will provide educational opportunities to many of South Africa's uneducated blacks.
``The ultimate goal is to raise the education opportunities of the black people of South Africa,'' said B&C President Robert Brown.
Greensboro's Bennett College hopes to take a leading role in educating South Africa's black women, President Gloria Scott said. Bennett is a historically black women's college, a type institution absent in South Africa. by CNB
