ECSU STUDENT TRIES TO SAVE ACCIDENT VICTIM

Anthony Dunlow, with a bloody mouth and quivering limbs, looked as if he'd been the one hurt in a two-car crash Wednesday morning on Halstead Boulevard in Elizabeth City.

But it was Dunlow, a 20-year-old Elizabeth City State University student, who tried in vain to save the life of a 77-year-old Elizabeth City woman fatally injured when her car collided with a pickup truck.

The victim's name was being withheld until a family member could be notified.

Other details of the wreck, which occurred around 10 a.m., were not expected to be released by police until today.

``We are still gathering the facts and doing the investigation,'' Assistant District Attorney Samantha Edwards said.

Dunlow, who remained on the scene after rescue workers had taken the woman to Albemarle Hospital, said he was following a southbound pickup truck on the five-lane highway when the collision occurred at Brookridge Drive, near Herrington Village Apartments.

The identity of the pickup's driver has not been released.

``I was riding behind the truck, and she pulled out,'' he said. ``They both looked like they were trying to avoid each other . . .''

The woman's car was hurled into a water-filled ditch nearby, and Dunlow leaped out of his Honda Civic and ran to assist her.

``I ran into the woods and jumped into the water. When I checked, she didn't have a pulse, so I started breathing for her until help came.''

Another motorist, Jacob Leanard of Elizabeth City, was traveling northbound on Halstead. He also saw the accident and corroborated Dunlow's description of it.

``The truck was going south and the car pulled out. It was just inevitable,'' Leanard said.
