CROSS COUNTRY STAR TURNAGE LOOKING SOUTH

Attention, colleges in North Carolina:

The premier girls cross country runner in South Hampton Roads might be interested in one of your schools - if your school shows an interest in her.

Meredith Turnage of Western Branch, unbeaten in dual competition this year and a winner by one minute and 25 seconds over her nearest challenger in a Wednesday meet at Churchland, is starting to focus her thoughts on which college she will attend in September.

Currently standing 22nd in a graduating class that will number about 350, Turnage carries a 3.7 average.

``I've sent out a resume to a number of schools,'' said Turnage. ``I've heard from a few. The coach at Mary Washington called. I had a letter from North Carolina State.

``I think I would like to go out of state and I really like some of the North Carolina schools - N.C. State, Wake Forest and East Carolina.'' She has visited Duke and the University of North Carolina.

The 5-foot-4, 105-pound Turnage, who turned 17 on Sept. 15, had a 19:18 clocking over the 3.1-mile Churchland course Wednesday. She ran into a strong wind over most of the course.

Since Churchland did not have a complete team, the girls competed along with the boys.

``That throws me off a little in setting my pace,'' said Turnage, usually a frontrunner. ``I find myself behind a lot of people and I feel like they are beating me.'' Nevertheless, she had more boys behind her than in front.

Turnage said she wanted to get her time down into the 18s at the district meet in two weeks.

``The regional is going to be tough this year,'' she said. ``I hope to finish in the top three. And I want to be in the top five at the state.''

BILL LEFFLER

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Led by fourth-ranked Billy Edwards, Tallwood defeated Green Run and First Colonial in a Beach District meet. Edwards, unbeaten in Beach competition, had a 17:07 clocking, 18 seconds ahead of No. 3 Zac Halm of First Colonial.

GIRLS TENNIS

Great Bridge advanced three players into the ``A'' bracket semifinals at the Southeastern District tournament.

Defending champion Sara Guthrie and runner-up Carey Stafford dropped only one game apiece over their first two matches. Guthrie is seeded first and Stafford third. The third Wildcat, Megan Romash, upended No. 4 Karin DeFreitas of Deep Creek at love in the second round, then outlasted Western Branch's Mary Beth Tinkham, 6-1, 6-7, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Justina Petsch of Churchland will play Stafford and Guthrie will meet Romash in today's semifinals.

First Colonial's Milly Kannarkat and Tallwood's Leslie Beach, the No. 1 and 2 seeds, continued to roll in Wednesday's quarterfinal round of the Beach District tournament. First Colonial maintained its team lead with 48 points. Cox is second with 31. The semifinals are today at 3 p.m. at First Colonial.

Half the seeds fell as the Eastern District tournament opened at Lake Taylor. Booker T. Washington's Sharon McClannan upset No. 4 Mina Wellman of Norview in the first round, and the Bookers Tracy Reamey, ranked third, lost to teammate Donna Self in the quarterfinals. The other semifinalists are top-seeded Elaine McCall of Granby and No. 2 Jennifer Warren of Maury.
