Leave it to Deep Creek coach Jerry Carter to put a high school football game in perspective.
Asked about the significance of tonight's showdown between Indian River and Deep Creek, Carter said, ``I don't think it's as important as Saddam Hussein amassing troops along the Kuwaiti border.''
Still, tonight's game pits the Southeastern District's top two teams and the only ones unbeaten in district play.
Comparing common opponents, Deep Creek, ranked No. 2 in South Hampton Roads, easily beat Lake Taylor (21-0) and Wilson (34-6). Meanwhile, No. 4 Indian River lost to Lake Taylor (7-0) and barely got by Wilson (6-0).
Still, the Braves are coming off a huge victory, having ended Norcom's 18-game winning streak last week, 14-13.
In the night's only other game pitting ranked opponents, No. 5 Norcom travels to Chittum Field to take on third-ranked Booker T. Washington.
The Bookers haven't beaten Norcom in 10 years, dating to a 25-6 victory in 1984. Since then, Norcom has outscored the Bookers 239-25.
