Back when Chuck Robb was embroiled in controversy over wild parties, drugs and other unsavory peccadilloes unbecoming a governor, and later as a senator representing our state, I desperately longed for a knight in shining armor to come along in the next election and oust him from his seat. Alas, what happens? The worst of one's nightmares emerges - Oliver North - and is now Robb's only viable contender. This is like inviting a bite from a black widow to the sting of a scorpion.
Robb doesn't deserve another term, what with his embarrassing infractions while holding such high public office, but we have no better in North, a liar and someone who uses televangelical fervor and devices to wrest money from the elderly and easy marks; a man who whines of needing millions when his coffers are already brimming from book sales, international support and hordes of other money-grubbing efforts. With Marshall Coleman's weak grasp of the state's needs, this leaves me without a clue at this point as for whom to vote.
There have been many elections where voters had to hold their nose when they cast their votes for one of two evils. This one, however, goes far beyond that. For the particularly faint of heart, it may be wise to bring a barf-bag when you make your way to the polls this November.
