A man and a woman were found shot to death Friday night, and a 35-year-old man was being questioned by police in connection with their deaths.
While police did not offer a motive in the shootings, neighbors of the female victim said that the man being questioned was the woman's jilted lover and that he had carried out a long-standing threat to kill her and her new boyfriend.
``He'd been trouble for her a long time. Long time,'' said a neighbor, who asked that her name not be used. ``He hated she was with this other man.''
Police found the two victims about a block apart.
Police released the name of the man they were questioning, but he had not been charged late Friday.
Police were first called to the 200 block of N. 7th St. about 7:15 p.m. for a report of someone having been shot.
They found 31-year-old Marie Norman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Minutes later, police were told of a second shooting on nearby North 6th Street. When officers arrived there, they found Wayne Christopher Herbert, 33, also suffering from a gunshot wound. He died a short time later.
Both had been shot with a small-caliber handgun.
Relatives and neighbors said that Norman had previously dated the man who was in custody and that they had had a long relationship. It had broken up, however, and Norman had been seeing Herbert, they said.
Witnesses said that Norman was shot in front of her home and that the suspect then chased Herbert around the corner, where he was shot.
