A 27-year-old Virginia Beach woman was killed Friday evening when her car apparently went out of control and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.
Claire Chamberlain, of the 1200 block of Naxera Circle, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the other vehicle, James McRoberts, 23, of the 1300 block of Pamlico Blvd., was taken to Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately known, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police said the driver of a third vehicle witnessed the accident, which occurred about 6:15 p.m. in the 900 block of Centerville Turnpike.
The witness said Chamberlain was heading north in a Pontiac Firebird when the car twice went off the right side of the road. The first time, the car returned to the pavement safely. But the second time, the driver apparently overcorrected.
The Firebird crossed the center line and into the path of a GMC pickup driven by McRoberts.
The pickup hit the passenger side of the Firebird, crushing it and sending it off the road.
Police said Chamberlain was wearing a seat belt.
