Eight local bowlers will be inducted into the Tidewater Virginia Bowling Council Hall of Fame this year.
The induction dinner/dance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Radisson Hotel in Virginia Beach.
Art Leimbach has been chosen for superior bowling performance. Dot Short, Elo Gewin, Joy Allred, Lil McGreevy and Cleveland Wheatley were picked for meritorious service. Steven Mitchell and Chicora ``Corrie'' Martin were selected as Star of the Future honorees.
A capsule look at the new Hall of Famers:
Leimbach - has been ranked as All-Metro Bowler of the Year and placed in the top five on seven occasions. Still carries a near 190 average at age 70.
Short - a director of the Portsmouth Women's Bowling Association for 23 years who designed the Hall of Fame pin and the first local YABA patches.
Wheatley - bowled in local leagues for 45 years and helped form the Virginia State Men's Bowling Association in 1953.
Gewin - a sanctioned bowler since 1958 and a director of the TWBA for 17 years.
McGreevey - participated in three or more leagues for the last 40 years and in 27 consecutive WIBC tournaments. Served as a TWBA director for five years.
Allred - bowling in this area for 32 years, she was instrumental in forming the Tidewater Virginia Bowling Council in 1986.
Mitchell - An avid bowler since 1987, the Tidewater Community College student has rolled a 279 game and 692 series.
Martin - A nine-year YABA member, she was the 1992 East Carolina University All-Campus women's bowling champion and the '93 runnerup. Has been a YABA coach for four years.
BOWLER OF THE WEEK honors go to Phil Reed, who turned one of his longest evenings in a bowling center into a night he will never forget.
Reed,a 178-average bowler in the Saturday Night Classic Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake, opened league play with a sub-par 162. He followed with 171 and was complaining that he couldn't seem to do anything right.
But it all came together in game No. 3 as he racked up 12 strikes in a row en route to his first 300 game.
DUCKPIN DATA - Charlie Southworth took over the second weekend lead in the Herman Gaines Classic at Victory Lanes with a five-game handicap total of 869. He had a scratch set of 754. The tournament concludes today. . . . Bobby Wetherbee is on a tear in the Industrial League, shattering high game with a 198 single in a 489 set. A five-fill on a last-frame spare cost him a 200 game. Wetherbee has rolled six consecutive 400 series in this league and now sports a 144 average. In the same loop Donnie Long, perennial holder of the Industrial's highest average, also has six 400 sets and is averaging 145. . . racking up a 494 series. . . . Brad Watts had a season high 430 series in the Trinity Baptist League. . . . A Just for You Tournament for morning league bowlers only is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 at Victory Lanes. It will be a 100 percent handicap 3-game tournament. . . . The Portsmouth Duckpin Bowlers Association has elected four of its most active bowlers as officers for 1994-95. Don Ferguson, a three-league regular who averages in the 120s, is the new president. Other officers are Sandy Chiera, vice president; Martha Rush, secretary; and Rusty Burke, treasurer. . . . Thirteen-year-old Brandon Long pitched a 140 game and 373 series in the Victory Youth League. He averages 101. Kyle Austin, an 8-year-old in the same league, notched games of 106 and 110. Kendra Allen fired another 400 series, reaching 418 with a 167 game. . . defunct Lucky Strike Bowling Center? It's going to be revised in a new double-elimination single-game format and being planned in the near future at Victory Lanes. It will be limited to 64 bowlers.
TENPIN TOPICS - Dot Linn registered an all-spare 182 in the Road Runners League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . The Bowling Babes, who compete at Pinboy's of Western Branch, have received YABA awards for rolling the sixth highest handicap game in the nation last season by a junior girls team. The Bowling Babes had a 2,932 series, just 106 pins off the national best. This team is composed of four 13-year-olds - Jennifer Rice, Tara Kulenguski, Sheri Alford and Samantha Mattoon - and one 12-year-old, Jamie Howell. . . . Diane Adams smacked a 264 single in her 586 series in the Shooting Stars League at Plaza Bowl. . . . Hey, Reba Callis: where is my association yearbook? . . . Gina Forehand, now sporting a 203 average in the Friday Screwballs League at Pinboy's of Norfolk, shot her first 700 ever with games of 258, 220 and 224 for 702. . . . Carrie Paisley had the week's finest game and series among the women bowlers with a 279 single and 704 series in the Monday Scratch Doubles League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. Tom Garrett flipped a 284 game in the same league. . . . Junior gems: Mike Heath had a 666 series in the Big/Little League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. Nick Lewis, 14, tossed a 241 game in the Junior/Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . Ken Cowan slammed a 280 game in the Lucky Strikers loop at Plaza Bowl. . . . January 15 is the deadline for applicants for the Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Award sponsored by ABC. It carries a $1,000 annual scholarship, renewable up to $4,000. Local coaches should contact YABA and enter candidates. . . . Eric Crafton and Pat Edwards paired for 633 to win the weekly Scotch Doubles at Franklin Bowling Center. . . . Area wheelchair bowlers might be interested in knowing that Al Uttecht, from Anaheim, Calif., rolled a four-game wheelchair world record of 947. . . . Quinton Jones, the Virginia male entry in the Coca-Cola World Cup, finished 22nd and Pearl Snead, the state's woman contestant, placed 19th. Winners of the two $3,000 top prizes were Sam Lantto of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lucy Giovinco of Atlanta, Ga. They will now vie in the 30th AMF Bowling World Cup finals in Hermosillo, Mexico Nov. 6-13. . . . The third annual Southern Regional Open concludes today at Franklin Bowl. The finals, featuring 16 bowlers, starts at 8 a.m. Following the match play, the top five qualifiers will meet in the up-the-ladders scramble for the $2,500 top prize. by CNB
