WAITING FOR A RESCUE

A 58-foot catamaran sailing from Newport, R.I., ran aground on a

sandbar near Lynnhaven Inlet late Monday night. Owner/operator

Jacques Demsder, a Canadian who lists Paris as his home, radioed the

U.S. Coast Guard for help shortly after 11 p.m., said Lt. Jim

Mayors, Coast Guard spokesman. The starboard pontoon of the

catamaran sunk when pumps were unable to control flooding on board

the craft. Demsder and a passenger were rescued at about 2:30 a.m.

Tuesday by a salvage boat. The Virginia Beach salvage company Sea

Tow was called when a Coast Guard vessel was unable to get close

enough to the catamaran to rescue Demsder and his passenger. Sea Tow

has made arrangements to salvage the craft as soon as the wind and

seas calm.
