ROBB DOES HIS BEST FOR VIRGINIA

As the Senate race heats up, it is time to return to the issues involved. It is time to examine Chuck Robb's record and see if he should be replaced, and, if so, by whom.

Five years ago I wrote to Sen. Robb about some problems I was having with Medicare. In response, he invited me - an unknown country doctor from the Eastern Shore - to Washington to discuss this with him. He later visited my office to see first-hand some of the difficulties involved in providing quality health care in a poor area. He refused to make any promises other than ``to do the best I can.''

Over the years his record reflects ``doing the best'' for the people of Virginia and the nation as a whole. I have not always agreed with his stand on a particular issue, but he has been consistent in pushing for what he believes will, in the long run, help make Virginia and America strong. I admire his courage to take the stand he believes in rather than one that is politically correct.

In these complex times with complex decisions, we cannot elect a person to the Senate based on TV commercials or tabloid-style media reports. We must choose the person who will consistently represent all Virginians - whether from rural area or city, mountains or seashore, rich or poor, farmer or factory worker. We must choose the person we can trust to weigh the issues carefully and take the right stand.

We must choose to re-elect Sen. Chuck Robb.
