WINDS KEEP CHARTER FLEETS AT THE DOCK; CATCHES FEW

The northeaster that buffeted the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina for the past week was more than enough to convince most anglers to scratch their planned fishing outings.

For example, the 60-boat charter fleet sailing from Oregon Inlet did not get into the ocean between Monday and Sunday. Ditto just about every other boat between Ocracoke and Chincoteague.

Unfortunately, the blow came just as some splendid fall action was beginning to unfold, highlighted by some of the year's best surf-fishing catches along the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Still, a few anglers braved the elements to test inshore waters. And a handful recorded impressive hauls. Here's a rundown of some recent catches:

Virginia Beach offshore: No major catches reported.

Virginia Beach inshore: Speckled trout: Artuban Mitchell, Virginia Beach, 6 pounds, 12 ounces, caught from Rudee Inlet shoreline; and Gilbert Olguin, Virginia Beach, 5-0, Rudee Inlet shoreline.

Ocean View, Lynnhaven: No major catches reported.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel: No major catches reported.

Eastern Shore seaside: No major catches reported.

Eastern Shore bayside: No major catches reported.

Outer Banks inshore: Red drum release: David Christian, Powhatan, Va., caught at Cape Point on Hatteras. Speckled trout: Rodney Black, Kinston, N.C., 6-3, surf; Matthew Gravitt, Richmond, 4-0, surf; Christopher Williams, Chesterfield, Va., 4-0, surf; and Carl Berry, Kitty Hawk, 4-0, surf. Sheepshead: Paul Long, Johnstown, Pa., 11-4, Hatteras Inlet.

Fresh water: Largemouth bass: Amiee Turnier, Virginia Beach, 7-2, caught at Lake Prince; and Charlie Fender, Chesapeake, 6-12, Lake Prince. Striped bass: Steven Rose, Suffolk, 15-8, Lake Meade; and April Donaldson, Newport News, 8-12, Lake Prince. Pickerel: Rick Stanley, Norfolk, 5-0, Lake Whitehurst. Sunfish: Bob Brewer, Virginia Beach, 1-9, Lake Prince.
