EASTERN REGION GOLF, GIRLS TEAM TENNIS OPENS TODAY

First Colonial will open defense of its Eastern Region girls tennis team title today when the tournament gets underway at the sites of the four district champions.

The Beach District champion Patriots will host Southeastern District runner-up Western Branch today at 2:30 p.m.

In today's other first-round matches:

Peninsula District champion Ferguson hosts Eastern District runner-up Granby at 3 p.m.

Southeastern champion Great Bridge hosts Beach runner-up Cox at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The first round will be completed Tuesday, when Eastern champion Booker T. Washington hosts either Lafayette or Tabb at 2 p.m.

The Rams and Tigers will play off for the Peninsula District's second regional slot today at 4 p.m. at Huntington Park in Newport News.

The regional semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Owl Creek Municipal Tennis Center in Virginia Beach. The final is set for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Owl Creek.

PAUL WHITE Eastern Region golf opens today in Hampton

The two-day Eastern Region Golf Tournament begins today at The Hamptons with district champions Cox, Great Bridge, Tabb and Granby expected to contend for the title.

Tee times at The Hamptons begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:34 a.m., with the final group including Cox's Troy Cummings, Tabb's Phillip Welke, Great Bridge's Robbie Twine and Granby's Jason Copeland.

The tournament will move to Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk on Tuesday for final round.

The top two teams qualify for next week's State Group AAA championships, also to be played at The Hamptons.

Meanwhile, the top six individuals from non-qualifying teams will also move on to state play.
