About 23,000 Outer Banks customers lost power Monday morning after salt accumulated on electrical equipment, North Carolina Power officials said.
According to Customer Service Director Ted Kranz, salt accumulation caused an insulator on a transmission line to fail, resulting in the extensive outage. Power was out from 5:53 a.m. until 7:43 a.m.
North Carolina Power serves about 26,000 customers on the Outer Banks.
Dare County Schools delayed opening for two hours Monday as a result of the power outage, but one bus from Corolla left before power went out, and about 25 students had to wait at school before classes started, school officials said.
