FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATED

Suffolk police are asking for public help in shedding some light on a weekend traffic accident that left a Suffolk man dead.

Andrew Jack Watson, 42, of the 400 block of West Washington St., was killed around 5:30a.m. Saturday after being struck by a six-wheeled Ford pickup in the westbound lane of U.S.58 near the truck scales.

Watson, who was wearing all navy-blue clothing, was killed instantly. But police are still puzzled as to what he was doing there. Police said Watson was on foot at the time of the accident, was miles from home and may have been trying to cross the road.

Suffolk Patrolman J.W. Griggs said Monday that the truck driver told police all traffic around him was shifting lanes ``like everybody was dodging something'' shortly before he struck Watson.

The driver told police that ``he knew he struck something but did not see what he hit,'' according to police reports. He later returned to the scene and found Watson.

Watson is described as a white male, 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds.

Anyone who may have seen Watson while driving on U.S.58 between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Saturday is asked to call Suffolk police at 925-6350.
