SOUPER SATURDAY RAISES ABOUT $6,700

A super turnout at Souper Saturday 1994 will help an estimated 75 Isle of Wight County families keep warm this winter.

Although final figures are not yet tallied, the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program Inc. made about $6,700 at its largest fund-raising event of the year, according to Richard MacManus, the organization's spokesman. About 1,500 community residents went to the all-you-can-eat luncheon Oct. 8 at Trinity United Methodist Church, he said.

``Attendance at Souper Saturday was excellent this year.''

All money raised from the group's soup luncheon goes toward helping local families who need help paying fuel bills, MacManus said. Next month Christian Outreach will turn the money over to the county Department of Social Services, which will determine which families will benefit from the funds.

Christian Outreach raised $2,000 more at Souper Saturday '94 from the debut of its newest fund-raising project, The Smithfield Coloring Book. It features drawings of local citizens and buildings and sells for $4.

Proceeds from the coloring-book sale are earmarked for Christian Outreach home-repair projects, MacManus said. These projects involve Christian Outreach volunteers doing basic repairs and maintenance on houses of county residents referred by the Social Services Department. by CNB
