2 ARRESTED WITH GUNS AT SCHOOL FIVE INDIAN RIVER YOUTHS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AT SALEM.

Police arrested two Chesapeake teenagers armed with concealed and fully loaded semiautomatic handguns in the Salem High School parking lot during classes Tuesday, authorities said.

The teenagers and three companions, all students at Indian River High School in Chesapeake, were taken into custody about 1 p.m. after officer Chris Hession saw them loitering in the Salem parking lot, police spokesman Mike Carey said.

When Hession approached, they got into a car and drove away. Hession stopped the car and arrested the teens when he found one was carrying a concealed gun.

A second gun was found in the car, Carey said.

Carey said police are investigating why the Indian River students drove to Salem High with the guns and a small amount of marijuana about an hour before classes ended.

Carey said he wasn't aware of a rivalry between students from the two schools. One of the students told police that he went to Salem to visit a cousin, Carey said.

All of the Chesapeake students were male, and four were 17. Their names were not available because they are minors.

The name of an 18-year-old in the car wasn't released because he had not been charged Tuesday night.

Two of the juveniles were charged with possession of concealed 9 mm and One was also charged with possession of a pager on school property and having marijuana, Carey said.

They were taken to Tidewater Detention Home.

A third juvenile was charged with giving police false identification and was released to his parents. The fourth 17-year-old was not charged.

All were reported for truancy, Carey said.

This is at least the sixth time in two years that students were charged with taking guns to Salem High School or nearby Salem Middle School.

At Indian River's 1992 homecoming, a student from rival Oscar Smith High School was shot by an Indian River student during the football game's halftime celebration. ILLUSTRATION: Staff color map
