DAM NECK EXPANSION: With an increase in students from other services, the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Center is adding a classroom to its facility at Dam Neck Fleet Combat Training Center in Virginia Beach. A ground-breaking ceremony was held Monday. The center provides basic training for all Navy intelligence personnel.

BONE MARROW DRIVE: A bone marrow drive will be held 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Theater for all active-duty military, Defense Department civilian employees and dependents of active-duty personnel. The Defense Department's goal is to put 25,000 personnel a year on the National Bone Marrow Registry. For more information, call 433-3433. RETIREE DAY: Retirees from all service branches are invited to hear presentations on legislative developments and management of personal affairs during Retiree Day and Open House on Saturday at the Fort Monroe Officers Club in Hampton. For information, call 727-2093.

DEPLOYMENT:

More than 12,000 sailors and Marines aboard 14 ships and submarines will leave Thursday on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. Here are the ships and their homeports: From Norfolk, the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, guided-missile cruisers Anzio and Cape St. George, destroyers Kidd and Peterson, attack submarine Boise, amphibious assault ship Nassau, transport dock Ponce and dock-landing ship Gunston Hall; from Charleston, S.C., guided-missile frigates Klakring and Robert G. Bradley; from Early, N.J., fast-combat support ship Detroit; and from Groton, Conn., attack submarines Annapolis and Springfield.

CHANGE OF COMMAND:

Lt. Gen. William W. Hartzog relieves Gen. Frederick M. Franks as commanding general of the Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe in Hampton. Hartzog has served as deputy commander in chief of the U.S. Atlantic Command. Franks is retiring after 35 years in the military.

Capt. Douglas A. Brook relieves Capt. James R. Shorter Jr. as commander of the Naval Reserve Unit at the Navy Exchange Service Command in Virginia Beach. Brook is a vice president with the LTV Corp. Shorter is a partner in the law firm Thacher Proffitt & Wood. ILLUSTRATION: BY THE NUMBERS
