SHEARLING IS MAKING FASHION COMEBACK

WHAT'S COOL in outerwear this season is shearling for both men and women. Unseen since the mid-'70s, its reincarnation is funkier. It looks distressed, with unfinished edges and exposed seams and it's found on full-length coats, barn jackets and vests, as well as trim on collars and as lining in boots.

Tired of looking like everyone else at the mall? Here's your chance to taste a bit of the exotic by dressing like real natives do in China or India.

Mongolian tunics, Mandarin necklines, kimonos and blanket fabrics, border prints, gauzes and chiffons are now available at local Pier 1 imports stores.

Look for details such as frog closures, fringed edges, blanket stitches, quilting or padding, coins used on buttons, twisted cords, tassels, fringe and scroll for that special foreign touch. Don't dress head to toe native - it looks too much like a costume - just mix it with your regular clothes.

When it comes to boots, it's the rugged and outdoorsy style that is most popular this season. The rustic hiking boot or a version thereof in suede or nubuck looks great with utilitarian or surplus-inspired clothing.

Young girls wear these lug soles with little flowery dresses and look charming, but don't attempt it if you're past puberty.

Remember the Breck girls? Those pastel portraits graced the pages of leading magazines over the past 40 years and made Brooke Shields, Kim Basinger, Cybill Shepherd, Jaclyn Smith and Christie Brinkley famous.

Well, here's your chance to join this illustrious cast. The search is on for the new Breck girl for 1995, and everyone is invited to enter this contest.

The three selected Breck girls will be chosen from three age categories - 5 to 21 years, 22 to 39 years and 40 and over.

To enter, send an official entry form available on tear-off pads at most supermarkets and follow the instructions about what you need to send in.

Winners will get $5,000 and other prizes in addition to being a spokesperson for Breck.

Not a bad deal if you're beautiful, intelligent, articulate and have gorgeous hair. Hey, some people get all the breaks. ILLUSTRATION: A double-breasted shearling barn jacket by Mossimo is in style
