SPORTS EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

YOUTH SOCCER: Several area youth soccer teams traveled to Richmond recently to compete in the RMYSL Columbus Day Tournament. Representing the Chesapeake Soccer Club was the Lightning U-15 girls' select team, which took home a championship trophy with four shutout wins.

The Lightning opened the competition with a 1-0 win over McLean U-15 on a goal by Kristy Davis. Scores by Kendall Smith and Kelly Hales set up a 2-0 win over Chester Enon U-15, and the Lightning blanked Dale U-15 5-0 on goals by Katie Kraemer, Amy White, Sabrina Fenton, Christine Aulicino and Meenal Walia to reach the finals.

In the title game, the Lightning topped off their weekend with a 3-0 win over Pocoshock U-16 on two goals by Kraemer and a score by Joy Gilmore.

White had a hand in all four shutouts.

The Elizabeth River Soccer Club also had a good showing, with two teams reaching the finals in their respective divisions.

The ERSC Renegades U-11 team swept to a tournament title in their division with four shutout wins. The Renegades opened play with a 2-0 win over Spotsylvania Hotspur on goals by Tom Winfree and Matthew Bright, followed by a 1-0 victory over Charlottesville on Rockt Parr's goal.

The Renegades romped over the Yorktown Patriots 4-0 on scores by Chris Page (2), Shemaiah Davis, and Bright to reach the finals in the Red Division. Paced by two goals from Bright and scores by Page and Davis, the Renegades defeated the Pocochock Panthers 4-0 to take home the trophy.

The ERSC Warriors U-14 team compiled a 2-0-1 record in the preliminary rounds, and were tied with the RSU Cardinals for the right to advance to the finals. The teams went to penalty kicks, and were still tied after the first round. In sudden death, the Cardinals missed their opening kick, but Curtis Myers converted his to send the Warriors to the title game, where they fell 4-1 to the Gary (NC) Kicks. Sean Warren scored the lone goal for the Warriors.
