HELEN F. GILLIAM

Helen F. Gilliam, 87, of the first block of Hobson St. and William T. Hall Adult Residential Center, died Oct. 14, 1994, in Sentara Nursing Center, Portsmouth.

She was born in Norfolk County. Mrs. Gilliam, a retired school teacher, taught in the Chesapeake, Franklin and other area school systems for over 50 years. Mrs. Gilliam also taught adult education at Norfolk State College. She received her B.S. degree from Virginia State College of Petersburg, Va., and her master's degree from New York University. Mrs. Gilliam was also a Ph.D candidate in the field of psychology, and was affiliated with the Kirk Cone Center for mentally retarded children, Portsmouth.

Mrs. Gilliam was a member and trustee of Gilmerton Star AME Zion Church, Chesapeake, a choir member, sunday school teacher, and was involved in many other church organizations and auxiliaries. She was also director of adults of the Norfolk District Board of Christian Education.

Survivors include five nieces, including her guardian, Catherine O. Tillar of Pleasantville, N.J.; six nephews; and cousins and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Gilmerton Star AME Zion Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Medis W. Cheek. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will begin at noon today in Corprew Funeral Home. The family will be at 2708 Magnolia St., Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the funeral service. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
