Luke Douglas Sellers of 35 W. 96th St, died Oct. 19, 1994, in Virginia Beach.
Mr. Sellers was born in Tioga, La., May 5, 1961. Luke was the former assistant conductor of the Virginia Symphony, where he led the Orchestra in a variety of concerts and ballets nationally as well as internationally. He regularly conducted the Virginia Symphony for the Old Dominion University production of ``The Nutcracker.''
Mr. Sellers received his music education at Louisiana State University and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. Studying conducting under Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein. As assistant conductor of the Virginia Symphony, Luke conducted classical and pops concerts, as well as performances in the Symphony's Mozart and More Series. He was a frequent conductor of the outdoor concerts in the Botanical Gardens. In addition, he programmed and conducted all educational activities of the Virginia Symphony Youth Orchestra and Young Peoples Concerts.
He is survived by his parents, Doug and Ann Sellers, and brothers, Ronnie and Gary Sellers, all of Tioga, La.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, in the main auditorium, by the Rev. Gary Lacroix. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Church of the Immaculate Heart in Tioga. Burial will be in Tioga Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Symphony to underwrite a French horn chair in the name of Luke Douglas Sellers.
