ANOTHER GUN, A SEMIAUTOMATIC, AT SALEM HIGH

A Salem High School student was arrested Thursday on charges of having an unloaded .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun under the seat of his car. It was the second time in three days police discovered guns at the school.

On Tuesday, Officer Chris Hession stopped a carload of Indian River High School students in the Salem parking lot during school hours, and later charged two of them with having concealed and fully loaded semiautomatic handguns.

Hession also made Thursday's arrest, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.

Hession, a member of the 4th Precinct's Crime Suppression Unit, regularly patrols around Salem, police said.

Thurston said Hession spotted a car in the school lot just before 2 p.m. and thought the driver might be a truant. After questioning the 16-year-old student, Hession found the gun under a car seat, Thurston said.

The Salem student has been charged with having a concealed weapon and having a gun on school property, which is a felony.

The student was taken to Tidewater Detention Home.

A student's arrest marked the second time in three days that police found guns at the school.
