The America and the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower left their warplanes behind in mid-September when they sailed with Army forces to the waters off Haiti for a possible invasion.
Violence was averted and U.S. forces went ashore to pave the way for the return of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The Eisenhower returned to Norfolk Oct. 6 and left Thursday for the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf.
Nearly two dozen Fort Eustis soldiers returned from Haiti Thursday; 64 more are scheduled to arrive early today from the Caribbean.
