NORFOLK SOUTHERN OPENS NEW KANSAS CITY TERMINAL

Norfolk Southern Corp. said Thursday that it began operating a new $12 million intermodal terminal in Kansas City. The Norfolk-based railroad expects the new terminal will serve a ``low-congestion alternative to Chicago'' for transferring intermodal freight between Western railroads and Norfolk Southern. From Kansas City, Norfolk Southern operates daily intermodal trains to and from Louisville, Ky., and Columbus, Ohio, which gives it access to the Ohio Valley and Southeast. The 100-acre site next to an interstate highway also has storage space for 300 trailers and 264 stacked containers. Norfolk Southern also uses the site to unload automobiles and as a terminal for Triple Crown Service, the railroad's joint venture with Conrail to use RoadRailers, hybrid rail cars/truck trailers. by CNB
