Police are searching for a 27-year-old Portsmouth man who was indicted Tuesday in the slaying of one man and the wounding of another Sept. 30.
A grand jury indicted James Allen Rivers on charges of capital murder, malicious wounding and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Rivers, of the 300 block of Dekalb Ave., was charged with the murder and robbery of Jerry Lee Greene, 29, and the malicious wounding of Dedric Devon Sherrod, 18.
On the night of Sept. 30, police said, Greene went to the 3100 block of Bide-A-Wee Lane to buy crack cocaine. During the drug deal, Rivers pulled a handgun and ordered Greene to hand over all his money. Greene tried to grab the gun but Rivers fired, wounding Greene in the chest. He died in a hospital.
Sherrod was in the area during the shooting and was struck in the back by a bullet. He was treated and released from a hospital.
Rivers, also known as ``Jim'' and ``Jimmy,'' has a medium brown complexion, is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has a light mustache and goatee. He has been known to frequent the Lincoln Park area.
