U.S. Coast Guard crew members rescued a surfer about 200 yards off this Outer Banks beach Wednesday night.
Kill Devil Hills resident Dan Greenburg, 19, was riding big waves Wednesday afternoon when he was swept out to sea about 6:45 p.m. His girlfriend called Nags Head Ocean Rescue when he failed to return to the beach. Rescue officials called the Coast Guard.
A helicopter from Elizabeth City and a 44-foot patrol boat from the Coast Guard's Oregon Inlet station assisted crew members in the rescue. The helicopter crew found Greenburg at about 9:30 p.m. An aviation survivalman/rescue swimmer from Elizabeth City helped hoist Greenburg from the waves. Coast Guard spokesmen said Thursday afternoon that Greenburg was fine.
