TONIGHT'S GAMES

A share of the Beach District lead could come down to who has the better kicking game when Tallwood visits Kempsville tonight.

And the Lions might have the edge.

All-Tidewater soccer player Danny McVey joined Tallwood's football team for his senior season and his powerful right foot has been a surprise weapon for the Lions.

McVey is third in the area in kick scoring and has kicked field goals of 29 and 30 yards. He also leads the area in punting with a 37.8-yard average.

``They might have some pluses in the kicking game, and it could be a factor,'' Kempsville coach John Bowles said.

The Chiefs counter with Nicole Frey, who joined the team three weeks ago and is 9-of-12 on extra-point attempts. Prior to her arrival, the Chiefs were 3-of-12.

Still, she lacks leg strength, and Bowles would likely turn to kickoff man Jeremiah Smith for long field-goal attempts.

Otherwise, these teams match up well. Both have stingy defenses - Tallwood ranks No. 1 in the area while Kempsville ranks No. 5 - and they sport ball-control, run-oriented offenses - Kempsville is No. 4 in the area and Tallwood is No. 7.

They are even close in the area poll. Tallwood is ranked No. 4 in South Hampton Roads while Kempsville ranks No. 5. [For complete game information, please see microfilm] by CNB
