When it comes to blocked punts, no one stands any taller than Nansemond River's junior defensive end Lashawn Pugh.
He blocked two punts Friday to help the Warriors shutout winless Smithfield, 33-0, in a Bay Rivers District. Pugh knocked one of Darius Ricks' punts out of the end zone for a safety with four minutes left in the first quarter, and he blocked another that Wilvern Flythe recovered in the Packer end zone for a touchdown with only seven seconds remaining in the first half.
Ricks accounted for another safety with 9:56 left in the game when he went down on one knee in his own end zone to field a bad snap in a punting situation.
Otherwise it was business as usual for Nansemond River (6-1, 3-1). Running back Clarence Skinner rushed for 76 yards and scored two touchdowns and Leon ``Snake'' Porter took a quarterback keeper around left end for a 73-yard touchdown run on the first play of the last period.
Drey Asbell kicked two extra points and a 25-yard field goal.
The score might have been higher but Smithfield (0-7, 0-4) forced five Warrior turnovers, including three fumbles and two pass interceptions.
``We wanted to work on our passing,'' Nansemond River coach Jerry Varacallo said. ``It looks like we will have to work on it some more.
``A couple of those fumbles were good hits. And Smithfield always goes for the ball.''
However, he was pleased with the Warrior defense that held the host Packers to minus 14 yards rushing and the blocked punts.
``Our special teams practice blocked punts every day, but we challenged them a bit more this week,'' the coach said.
